This new state law criminalizes the use of GPS devices to track a person&#8217;s location without their consent.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2366\" src=\"http:\/\/www.skipease.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/no-gps.jpeg\" alt=\"No GPS\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.skipease.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/no-gps.jpeg 240w, https:\/\/www.skipease.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/no-gps-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This new privacy bill is intended to protect people from stalkers and harrassment.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new law, anyone who places a GPS enabled device on another person&#8217;s vehicle without that person&#8217;s consent could face criminal charges.<\/p>\n<p>The law makes the placing of a GPS tracking device on someone else&#8217;s vehicle without their consent a criminal misdemeanor.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who is caught violating the law can be punished with up to a nine month prison sentence along with a $10,000 fine.<\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin State Senator Jerry Petrowski said that the new law was needed due to the widespread availability of GPS technology that can be used to monitor the movement of people.<\/p>\n<p>Petrowski noted that Wisconsin state laws had to catch up to the advance in technology in order to protect the privacy of the state&#8217;s citizens.<\/p>\n<p>The new anti-GPS tracking law includes exceptions for police as well as parents and guardians who want to track children under the age of 18.<\/p>\n<p>The law also exempts businesses that use the technology to track employees who drive company-owned vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Police still must obtain a warrant to use GPS devices to track people and businesses are allowed to track their fleets of company vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the law exempts lienholders of vehicles who want to use GPS tracking technology to monitor any vehicles that they own.<\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin&#8217;s new GPS law covers any device that could be used to track a person without their consent, including smart phones and mobile devices.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On July 1st, 2015 Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker signed the GPS Privacy Act into law.
